Where to get an AmneziaVPN server or key
The AmneziaVPN app is free, but it needs a server to connect to. Here are your two options - and how to be online in five minutes.
The short answer
You don't need your own server. There are two ways to get an AmneziaVPN connection:
- Self-host: rent a VPS, run Amnezia's server installer on it, and manage it yourself.
- Hosted key: subscribe to a provider that runs the servers and sends you a ready AmneziaWG key you import into the app. That's what Pyramid VPN does, for $5/month.
Self-hosting vs a hosted key
Honest comparison - self-hosting is genuinely good if you're technical:
- Cost: a decent VPS is $5-6/month for one location. A Pyramid VPN subscription is $5/month with servers in Germany and Sweden, and more coming.
- Setup: self-hosting means choosing a VPS provider, paying with a card that works there, running the installer, and debugging when something breaks. A hosted key is a five-minute import.
- Maintenance: your VPS is yours to patch, monitor, and rescue. With a hosted key that's our job.
- Anonymity trade-off: a self-hosted server's IP is tied to your VPS account. A shared provider mixes your traffic with other users'.

Why AmneziaWG and not plain WireGuard?
AmneziaWG is WireGuard with the protocol fingerprint removed, so deep packet inspection can't recognize and block it. Same speed, same encryption - it just keeps working on networks and in countries where plain WireGuard connections get dropped. More on that in VPN blocked? Here's why - and how to fix it.
